everywhere: "Don't complain about high prices; the people in the shop don't
make them, we only try to get a wide range of books and help customers as
well as we can. Books might look a bit than dearer in your home country but
the costs, the costs! We are not, I repeat not, a tourist office--it can be
very annoying to try to do your job and being interupted a hundred times a
day for the way to the Rijks-, Van Gogh or any other museum. (We are

AKO Paper booth (the main concourse of the Central Station, Stationsplein

buses and subways stop here). Sells daily papers from all over the
world, including the New York Times, Intl. Herald Trib, USA Today,
Wall Street Journal. Even sells Turkish, Russian, Greek, German,
Indian, French and other-language-papers.
American Book Centers (Kalverstraat 185, 1012 XC Amsterdam,

English-language community in Holland. Besides a large selection in
recent American fiction they stock a lot of SF and fantasy. The
staff is friendly and helpful. They also publish a newsletter.
They offer a 10% discount to students, teachers, and discount card

Check out the antiquarian selection on the second floor (which might
be the third floor to Americans?). "The best selection of English
literature I've seen recently, particularly on bibliographies,
biographies & autobiographies of writers; paperback fiction mixes
English with Dutch imprints. There are some well-priced
English-language rarities here."
Evenaar (Singel 348, tram 1-2-5). New and used books. "Travelers' guides.
At the back, a small but interesting second-hand shop."
Het Computercollectief (Amstel 312, 1017 AP Amsterdam, 0031-02-6223573,
fax 0031-20-6226668; Tram 6, 7 and 10, stop 'Oosteinde').
Amsterdam's source for computer-related information; it sells a
large range of computer software for different operating systems,
computer magazines, guidance books and software manuals in Dutch and
(most of them in) English.
Kloof Antiquarian (Kloveniersburgwal 44, 1012 CW Amsterdam, 0031-20-6223828;
Subway, stop 'Nieuwmarkt'). An antiquarian bookshop similar to Kok,
selling books about economics, law, history, psychology, science,
literature and encyclopedias.
Kok Antiquarian (Oude Hooghstraat 14-18, 1012 CE Amsterdam, 0031-20-6231191;
Subway, stop 'Nieuwmarkt'). A very interesting antiquarian bookshop
that sells second-hand Dutch books and English paperbacks (in the
basement), maps, books about art, architecture, history,
encyclopedias and illustrations.
Minotaurus (Sint-Antoniestraat). New books. "Typography, bibliophilical
printed pages, history of the book."
Oudemanhuispoort (Oudemanhuispoort, tram 4-9-14-16-24-25). Used books.
Pegasus (Singel 367, 1012 WC, 0031-020-6231138, FAX 0031-020-6203478,

New books. Eastern Europe and Slavic studies.
Scheltema, Holkema, Vermeulen (Koningsplein 20, tram 1-2-5, 1017 BB Amsterdam,

http://www.scheltema.nl). This is not only the best but also the
largest bookstore in the Netherlands. Donner in Rotterdam may be the
biggest in square meters, but SHV has more titles in stock. Six
floors full of books, from academic books to poetry and from travel to
literature in Dutch, English, French and German language.
Scheltema, Holkema, Vermeulen (Meibergdreef 9, 0031-020-5662777;
and Sarphatistraat 137, 0031-020-4205367). Other branches of the
Straat (Rosmarijnsteeg 8). Used books.
VU boekhandel (De Boelelaan 1105, 1081 HV Amsterdam, 0031-20-6444355,
FAX 0031-20-6462719; Tram 5, speed-tram 51, stop 'VU'). A recently
expanded, well-stocked academic bookstore. Besides catering to all
the university courses (the majority of books in English) of the
'Vrije Universiteit,' they sell lots of general books, maps,
magazines, etc. They also have quite a fair range of computer books
comparable to that of Het Computercollectief. Open Mon-Thu
9h-18.45h, Fri 9h-17.30h, Sat 9h-15.00h.
Valeton en Henstra (Nes 39, tram 4-9-14-16-24-25). New and used books,
modern art.
Van Wijngaarden (Overtoom 97, tram 1-6). New books. "Big selection of
travelers' guides and maps."
Waterstone's (Kalverstraat 152, 1012 XE Amsterdam, 0031-20-6383821). Quite
a large shop with 3-1/2 floors of books (the half floor is
dedicated to childeren books only). "Very experienced staff makes
you buy more than intended." The ground floor is for new books,
SF, crime, travel: very good selection, all the Lonely Planets and
Let's Gos are stocked, as well as local travel guides and magazines
(some titles only available from this shop). First (US second)
floor is for fiction, very large selelection, US and UK
publications stocked, as well as cookery, art, biography, poetry,
and literary criticism. Second floor (US third) for computer books,
history, health and languages. (Formerly WH Smith.)

As most Dutch shops, these bookshops are opened on Monday to Friday from
9.30h to 18.00h. On Saturdays they close an hour earlier. The
large bookshops in the center of town are now open on Sundays
from about 11.00h to 17.00h.

Boekhandel Verwijs (Hoogstraat 17 / Buitenhof 51, 2513 AH). New books.

books. "Ground floor is remainders; upstairs there is a large
selection of second-hand books. Most sections are by topic rather
than language, with English titles mixed in. Topic sections are
alphabetical. Novels are grouped by language, but are not
alphabetical. The staff probably won't have time to help you (the
shop also has a busy trade in Dutch schoolbooks) but browsing is
Paagman Boekhandel (Fred. Hendricklaan 217, 070 351-2041). General titles,
novels, cookbooks, travel, etc.
Ruward's (Spui 231, 070 363-6875; also a lunch-time shop inside the entrance
of the Institute of Social Studies, Kortenaerkade 12). "They
specialize in social science titles; particularly good on
development studies, Southern hemisphere, ecology, economics,
political science, social change, women's studies, etc. The main
shop also has a good selection of remaindered-yet-current
progressive titles. If they don't have the title you want, they'll
order it for you (mainly UK publishers)."

management, economics, computers, business and travel.


Groningen, the Netherlands:

Hasselt, Belgium:

De Markies van Carabbas (Minderbroedersstraat 9-11, B-3500, +32-11-225858
(FAX also)). A small bookstore specialised in all kind of art
books, catalogues and so on. Also has an excellent choice of Dutch
literature. Staff is very helpfull in tracking down books and
ordering from anywhere in the world.
De Slegte (Havermarkt 14, 3500 Hasselt, 011/22.74.00). New, used, and


Leuve/Leuven, Belgium:

Acco cv (134-136 Tiensestraat). The name stands for "academische
cooperatieve." It is a shop specialising in providing students with
course material and the like at reasonable prices. The literature
one can find there is mainly handbooks, encyclopedias and required
Carapaces (16 Parijsstraat). Comics shop, new and second-hand.
Club (Fochplein). General popular bookstore, also quite good for maps and
travel guides.
De Slegte (Bondgenotenlaan 47, 3000 Leuven, 016/22.68.81). New, used,
and remainders. Large second-hand bookstore, with large computer,
poetry, psychology, art, French, English, Chinese, and children's
Fonteyn Medical Books (13 Fochplein). Specialising in medical books and
other publications from all over the world.
Gobelijn (35 Mechelsestraat). Comics shop, new and second-hand.
Johannes (2 Beriotstraat). "Esoteric" bookshop, lots of occult and
religious (and sect-oriented) books.
De Kleine Johannes (47 Tiensestraat). Children's bookshop, with a fair
amount of Bible-inspired books, but not exclusively.
Peeters (153 Bondgenotenlaan). This shop is also the publisher for the KUL,
many Orientalistic, philosophic, religious, etc. works. Will do an
effort to find anything.
Plato (126 Tiensestraat). Mainstream bookshop.
Standaard Boekhandel (57 Naamsestraat). Shop owned by the Standaard
Uitgeverij, a rather big (for Belgium :-)) publisher. Fairly
mainstream stuff, except some of their own publications.
Wouters (48 Naamsestraat). Scientific bookshop, mainly engineering- and
